On December 4, 2024, the VocalizeIoT project conducted its second workshop at the Nairobi Technical Training Institute (NTTI). Facilitated by Solomon Githu and Joseph Musya from Waziup, the session aimed to present the IoT curriculum draft, train participants on the WaziLab platform, and introduce web and mobile application development concepts.
Key Activities and Engagement
The day started with an in-depth presentation of the IoT curriculum draft. Trainers reviewed and provided valuable feedback, ensuring alignment with their teaching needs. Following this, participants explored the WaziLab platform and learned how to integrate its features into IoT education effectively.
The afternoon session focused on web and mobile application development. Using VS Code and the WaziLab resources, trainers gained hands-on experience with APIs, databases, and cloud platforms. They successfully developed a simple web application that fetched sensor data from WaziCloud using APIs and displayed it on a browser.
Outcomes and Challenges
By the end of the workshop, the trainers gained a foundational understanding of web and mobile applications and improved their ability to utilize IoT tools and platforms. However, a technical knowledge gap was identified, particularly in programming and communication technologies. To bridge this gap, one of the trainers conducted a programming basics session using C, ensuring the lessons were directly applicable to the Arduino-based activities.
Next Steps
NTTI trainers will continue reviewing the IoT curriculum and providing feedback in upcoming sessions. They have also committed to internal skill-building initiatives to strengthen their programming and technical competencies, ensuring effective delivery of IoT education.
The workshop marks another significant step toward empowering educators and fostering a climate-smart, technology-driven future through the VocalizeIoT project. Stay tuned for more updates!
